You’re a professional, your insurance should be too.
When you incorporate therapy animals into your professional practice, whether it’s in a school, clinic, or office, your insurance coverage should reflect the work you do.
Through AAAIP, you have exclusive access to general liability insurance specifically designed for professionals like you, who are working with therapy animals every day as part of your job.
What the policy covers:
This isn’t the same insurance available to volunteers through therapy animal organizations. It’s built for professionals like you, who are doing this work every day as part of your job.
Right now, AAAIP Members with an Animal-Assisted Intervention Specialist Certification (C-AAIS), who have completed a AAAIP Evaluation for Professionals, are eligible to purchase insurance at the negotiated AAAIP insurance rate.
It can be difficult to understand what kind of insurance coverage you need when working in AAI. Our team created this short video to help you understand where to look in your existing policy and whom to contact if you need more coverage.
The Evaluation for Professionals is only available to AAAIP members who are Certified Animal-Assisted Intervention Specialists (C-AAIS) and are incorporating therapy or facility animals into their paid professional roles.
The Evaluation for Professionals takes place in your workplace and determines your animal’s degree of fit for your specific work environment.
When you’re ready to take the next step with your animal partner, follow these steps:
✔ Join AAAIP (Required)
✔ Get your Certification as an Animal-Assisted Intervention Specialist (C-AAIS). (Required)
✔ Complete the Evaluation for Professionals. (Required)
Yes. Your therapy animal is covered under the AAAIP policy while they are “on the job” engaging in therapy work with you as their handler.
Generally, no. Most homeowners’ or renters’ insurance policies exclude anything related to business or professional services. That means if you’re working with a therapy animal in a paid or professional setting, your regular insurance likely won’t protect you, or your clients, if something happens.
No. Insurance provided by a volunteer therapy animal organization, including Pet Partners, does not cover work that you do with your therapy animal as part of your paid job.
The annual policy premium for one therapy animal and one handler starts at $250 plus taxes and fees. You may add additional coverage and animals, which will impact your cost.
The AAAIP policy covers accidents during sessions, like if your client, student, or your property is harmed because of something you or your therapy animal did while working. It also covers injuries to your therapy animal, like if your therapy animal gets hurt during an animal-assisted intervention, care costs can be covered.
AAAIP Members with an Animal-Assisted Intervention Specialist Certification (C-AAIS), who have completed an AAAIP Evaluation for Professionals, are eligible to purchase insurance at the negotiated AAAIP insurance rate through The Business Insurers of the Carolinas.
